Unit Overview:

This unit examines the interrelationships of civic and community action, volunteering and philanthropy in a democratic society. The lessons focus on the Carter Center and President James Carter's volunteer activities as model for responsible citizenship. In addition, this short unit fits easily into U.S. History or government courses.

Unit Purpose:

Students explore ways they can help improve their world using a model of a modern day philanthropist, former President Jimmy Carter. Students also examine how volunteerism and responsible citizenship are linked.

Unit Objectives:

The learner will:
  • identify an individual citizen who creates solutions for local and international problems.
  • examine various existing volunteer groups and the history of volunteering in American democracy.
  • formulate ways to address local and world problems.

Service Experience:

Although lessons in this unit contain service project examples, decisions about service plans and implementation should be made by students, as age appropriate.

Reinforces service learning components. Prepares the way for participation in a philanthropic experience. These lessons also could be used as a base for a service learning project.
