Unit Overview:

This unit is designed to introduce the meaning of philanthropy and point out places in history where philanthropic acts occur. Students will reflect on their own acts of philanthropy and relate it to everyday situations.

Unit Purpose:

To introduce the meaning of philanthropy and point out places in history where philanthropic acts occurred. Students will reflect on their own acts of philanthropy and relate it to everyday situations.

Unit Duration:

Lessons vary from two class periods to a week. The service learning project with the retirement community is ongoing over four or five visits.

Unit Objectives:

The Learner will:

  • List philanthropic activities occurring in their own home, in their classroom, or in their school and analyze the relationship between "community need" and "private action."

  • Define philanthropy and list the traditions and values of Native American giving and sharing.

  • Analyze philanthropic acts and give examples of how they act selflessly.

  • Define Human Rights and investigate people who have taken action to fight for Human Rights.

  • Be able to identify philanthropic values of various historic figures.

  • Provide service in the community through an academic service learning project.

Service Experience:

Although lessons in this unit contain service project examples, decisions about service plans and implementation should be made by students, as age appropriate.

Students will team up with members of a retirement community to accomplish learning tasks.

Unit Assessment:

Students create a personal timeline of their philanthropic acts over a year. Then students write a personal narrative describing their service learning project, analyzing its value.
