Unit Overview:

The lessons in this unit are designed to help learners recognize that there are many steps involved in planning a service project. Students will become involved in raising funds and resources to help a family in need.

Unit Purpose:

The lessons in this unit are designed to help learners become more aware of the process involved in establishing a volunteer/service project. Learners will recognize a service project needs to have a service plan, budget, and funding.

Unit Objectives:

The learner will:

  • identify examples of private resources.
  • describe the process in planning a service project.
  • analyze the cost of the service project and propose a budget.
  • select a way to raise funds for the service project .
  • recognize that nonprofit organizations are competing for funding.

Service Experience:

Although lessons in this unit contain service project examples, decisions about service plans and implementation should be made by students, as age appropriate.

Students will plan a service project. They will be involved in advertising, fund-raising, researching, goal setting, carrying-out the goal, and evaluating.

Unit Assessment:

  • Evaluation of student work and performance
  • Teacher observation

School/Home Connection:

Lesson Three: How Much Will this Cost?

Notes for Teaching:

Each lesson can be taught as a stand-alone lesson, although students will benefit most if the lessons are taught in conjunction with a service project. The service project proposed in this unit is helping a family who has lost their possessions in a fire. The children's story, A Chair for My Mother by Vera Williams, will initiate conversation and brainstorming about the service project.

My class enjoyed this lesson. It helped them begin to realize what it takes to help the many who can use help in our small community alone.
