How to Teach Philanthropy in the Classroom (Part 1)
In addition to the many classroom resources there are several activities available to students that enhance and support philanthropy concepts:
- Extra-curricular (Athletics)
- Co-curricular (Forensics)
- Other activities (Scouting, 4-H, FFA, Earth Force, etc.)
EXTRA-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES
Athletics
As found in the "Good Sportsmanship Kit" of the High School Athletic Association of the state of Michigan, citizenship is parallel to sportsmanship. The following is an excerpt from the Kit.
The teachings and practice of athletics naturally leads to instruction of philanthropic concepts such as the common good and the sharing of time (practice) and talent (skills). Athletic instruction teaches (check all that apply):
Teamwork
Cooperative Effort
Goal Setting
Group Responsibility
Individual Accomplishments
Appreciation for Diversity
