Unit Purpose:

Students will gain an increased understanding and awareness of philanthropy as well as become involved in a philanthropic activity on a regular basis. While written for a Christian Middle School, the lessons may be easily adapted for public school use.

Unit Objectives:

The learner will:

  • explain in writing the five “Ws” and how of philanthropy.
  • list groups that benefit from philanthropy, ways philanthropy can be practiced and examples of philanthropy.
  • state their opinions on why philanthropy is important.
  • analyze mission statements and state ways various institutions support philanthropy.
  • keep a journal of their service learning activity over an extended period of time and produce a final project that relates to their individual experiences in the service learning activity.
  • describe and evaluate their service experiences in an essay.
  • define and identify the literary terms mood, theme, climax, and symbolism.
  • identify and explain the theme of philanthropy in A Christmas Carol.
  • evaluate, in an essay, a novel with a philanthropic theme.

Service Experience:

Although lessons in this unit contain service project examples, decisions about service plans and implementation should be made by students, as age appropriate.

Students will help with various jobs at a local nursing home.

Unit Assessment:

Students will keep a journal while participating in a service activity, complete a project and written test, analyze the philanthropy in a novel and write a response to it in essay form from a Christian perspective.
