  • describe the need all people have for friendship and belonging.

  • work with a partner to create a class "big book".

  • recognize the importance of facial expressions and their impact on other people.

  • generate a list of organizations that might help people who have an unmet need for friendship.

  • evaluate a list of organizations and reach a consensus concerning which group should be recognized.

Unit Purpose:

Students will recognize the importance of friendship in a person's life and identify organizations that help those without friends.

Unit Objectives:

The learner will:
  • describe the importance of friendship and work with a partner to create a page for a class "big book".

  • identify and describe emotions behind certain facial expressions.

  • develop lists of people who have an unmet need for friendship and organizations that help these persons.

  • evaluate a list and select those items on the list that meet established criteria.

  • create a plan for giving service.

Service Experience:

Although lessons in this unit contain service project examples, decisions about service plans and implementation should be made by students, as age appropriate.

In the culminating lesson, students will provide recognition to an organization that helps those who have no friends.

Unit Assessment:

Students will cooperatively produce a "big book" page. The teacher will also observe student behaviors of working with a partner and giving explanations of their choices (critical thinking). Students will be observed as they work on consensus building in small groups and through their participation in whole class sessions.
