Purpose:

The class will listen and respond to a presentation given by a member of a Community Foundation Youth Advisory Committee.

Duration:

One Forty-Five Minute Class Period

Objectives:

The learners will:
  • listen and respond to a member of a Community Foundation Youth Advisory Committee.

  • explain the purpose of a YAC.

  • participate in a group discussion

  • list the duties of a Youth Advisory Committee and how it can help the class.

Instructional Procedure(s):

Anticipatory Set:
Review with the class their choice(s) for a service project and their need for money to fund the project. Tell them that a member of the local community foundation Youth Advisory Committee will be here to speak to them today. Prepare the students for listening carefully by telling them that after the presentation, they will work in groups to list the most important duties of a Youth Advisory Committee. They will also list how the committee can be of help to the class.

  • After the speaker has finished, assign the students to groups of 4.

  • Have the students work together to list the most important duties of a Youth Advisory Committee and to list the ways in which the committee could help the class with their service project.

  • Have the class reconvene and share their conclusions.

  • After each group has had a chance to share, come to consensus as to how a Youth Advisory Committee might best help the class with the project. (They should conclude that the class could write a grant requesting funds for their project)

  • Tell the students that during the next lesson you will be working on gathering information in order to write the grant proposal.

Assessment:

Teacher observation of the students during their small group and whole class discussions, and the presentation of their ideas.
