Lesson 5: Jackie Joyner-Kersee
Handout 1

School/Home Connection—Who’s a Philanthropist?

Jackie Joyner-Kersee was a great athlete who against many odds became an Olympic gold medalist. She gives money for cities to build community centers for children.
Here is the assignment: Ask your child about these three philanthropic women. What type of philanthropy did they do? Did they give of their time, talent and/or treasure (money)?

Now tell your child of a philanthropist that you know about. It could be someone in history, a local person or even a relative. What did this philanthropist give: time, talent and/or treasure?

Your child will report back to the class tomorrow about the new philanthropist you have told them about. This way we will all learn that there are many philanthropists in the world. We are all capable of giving, perhaps not treasure but certainly time and talent.

Please complete and sign the bottom portion of this paper. Have your child return it to school tomorrow. Thank you for your help.
