No More Hate and Fear—Spread the Word!
Unit of 3 lessons
printEmail this Unit Overview

Unit Overview:

In this unit learners will examine the nature of prejudice, as well as cultural differences. They will reflect on how these differences can enhance our lives. They will also discuss how the fear and hate of other cultures is taught. They will focus on ways we can teach the acceptance of others, first with our peers and later with younger students. They will identify some specific cultural differences that they can celebrate and share with their class in persuasive projects. They will also create student-generated service learning projects (such as written and illustrated picture books) to present to younger students which highlight some elements of their own culture if they are ESL/ENL students. Reflection will be an on-going process, followed by celebration of the service learning project.

Unit Purpose:

This unit will focus learners' attention on the nature of prejudice and make them aware of the positive nature of cultural differences. Learners will apply knowledge of prejudice and cultural uniqueness by teaching these concepts to younger children.

Unit Objectives:

The learner will:

    • identify themes of prejudice and acceptance in songs and a story.
    • define prejudice and give an example of prejudice in a newspaper or magazine.
    • list causes of prejudice and describe ways to prevent or counteract prejudice.
    • represent acceptance in pictorial contexts.list culturally specific vocabulary found in a picture book.
    • identify perceived positive or negative connotations of words.
    • contrast dominant culture / minority culture elements in a book.
    • celebrate one diverse custom or cultural characteristic.
    • deliver a persuasive presentation.
    • define philanthropy and service-learning.
    • identify the causes of and solutions to prejudice and present that information to younger learners.
    • evaluate results of the service learning project.

Service Experience:

Although lessons in this unit contain service project examples, decisions about service plans and implementation should be made by students, as age appropriate.

The experiential component is a service-learning project designed to teach younger children about the causes of prejudice and the need for cultures to learn about and understand each other. The learners will produce their own books, songs, raps, skits, etc. They will present/perform their products to younger children.

Unit Assessment:

In Lesson One: You've Got to be Taught to Hate and Fear students are assessed through multiple journal entries, group work and two homework assignments. Lesson Two: Culture Ads uses a rubric to assess their persuasive presentations. In Lesson Three: Spread the Word! learning will be assessed through journaling of definitions, questions, procedure plan and reflections, and student presentations.

School/Home Connection:

  • Interactive Parent / Student Homework:
Lesson One: You've Got to be Taught to Hate and Fear
    - The learners will find an article that represents prejudice and find a picture that shows cultural acceptance and interaction. They are encouraged to request parental assistance/participation in selecting articles and pictures in order to satisfy the homework requirements.

Lesson Three: Spread the Word! - Parents will help their child plan and prepare a food from a different culture for the celebration.

Notes for Teaching:
