- Metaphor: the stones of activism, the rugged boulders of heroism, etc. These provide visual images that make the author's points more vivid.
- Anecdote: When Walker tells the story of Paul and how she learned to accept him, she gives a tangible example of what she believes in.
- Making it personal: When she discusses her family, she makes it personal, bringing the reader in to feel with her.
- Imagery: Like metaphor, the imagery Walker uses makes her points more vivid.
- Specific Examples: When Walker discusses Ghandi, MLK, Sojourner Truth, and Harriet Tubman, these specific examples make her points tangible.
