Unit Overview:

Learners will determine the difference between for-profit and nonprofit organizations. They will investigate jobs and/or internships in the nonprofit sector, and reflect on their own job related interests and skills.

Unit Purpose:

Learners will distinguish between nonprofit organizations and for-profit organizations. They will identify and dispel some of the myths of nonprofit employment. Using the Idealist: Action Without Borders Web site, www.idealist.org, the learners will investigate career opportunities in nonprofit organizations as well as some of the skills required in these careers. They will investigate a local nonprofit through an interview with an employee. They will orally present this information and conclude by writing personal reflections about nonprofits using the information that they found in their idealist.org investigation, their local nonprofit organization investigation, and the information obtained from the three interviews completed as homework.

Unit Objectives:

The learner will:

  • distinguish between nonprofit organizations and for-profit organizations.
  • identify and dispel some of the myths of nonprofit employment.
  • identify and explore a career opportunity in a nonprofit business/organization using the Idealist: Action Without Borders web site, www.idealist.org.
  • visually present their findings regarding a career opportunity.
  • identify careers of acquaintances as for-profit or nonprofit and the skills need for these types of careers.
  • identify and name a local nonprofit organizations.
  • Identify careers as for-profit or nonprofit, and the skill needed in the careers.
  • interview a spokesperson from a local nonprofit organization.
  • orally present information obtained from the interview.
  • reflect on new learning concerning nonprofits.

Unit Assessment:

  • Evaluation of involvement in team discussion and assignments
  • Completion of the research and the visual display of learning
  • Depth of understanding and reflection

Notes for Teaching:

Teacher Note: One of the resources used in this unit, for teachers as well as students, is Action Without Borders/Idealist org. Having a good understanding of this organization and the resources available on the web site will assist in the teaching and learning of this unit.
