Unit Overview:

Students will learn the difference between profit and nonprofit organizations and about the people who work in them by creating and performing a musical production.

Unit Purpose:

To define the difference between profit and nonprofit organizations and the types of careers that are involved with their operation. The concepts will be taught through the creation of and performance of a musical production.

Unit Objectives:

The learner will:

understand the difference between profit and nonprofit organizations and the kinds of careers involved with their operation.
research specific careers in the profit and nonprofit sectors.
create and perform a musical production providing details about a variety of occupations.

Service Experience:

Although lessons in this unit contain service project examples, decisions about service plans and implementation should be made by students, as age appropriate.

Students will create and perform a musical production for other students and the community that illustrates the difference between profit and nonprofit organizations and the careers involved.

Unit Assessment:

The students will write an essay comparing a career in the profit and nonprofit sector, including four advantages and disadvantages of one or the other.

Students will explore the difference between profit and nonprofit organizations and the types of careers that are involved with their operation. The concepts will be taught through interviewing, research, and the creation of and performance of a musical production.
Interactive Parent / Student Homework:
Parents will be involved, where possible, as helpers in the classroom. Most likely, they will help with costumes or occasional props. Parents should be part of the supportive audience.
