Purpose:

To share with other students, families, and/or the community a production designed and prepared by students to entertain the audience while explaining the difference between profit and nonprofit organizations and the types of careers within them.

Duration:

One Hour Class Period and One Half-Hour Class Period

Objectives:

The learner will:
  • perform the production the group has created about jobs in the profit and nonprofit sectors in their state.

  • state the advantages of working in the profit or nonprofit sectors.

Service Experience:

Although this lesson contains a service project example, decisions about service plans and implementation should be made by students, as age appropriate.

Students will perform a production of their creation for other students and some persons in the community. The performance defines the difference between profit and nonprofit organizations in conjunction with an entertaining look at the workers of the state.

Materials:

  • Sets

  • Costumes

Instructional Procedure(s):

Anticipatory Set:
The audience will enter the performing area and the narrator will say, “Welcome, Ladies and Gentlemen.”

  • The student performers will present their production.

  • As a follow-up, the students will write essays describing the advantages and disadvantages of jobs in the profit or nonprofit sectors.

Assessment:

The essay should make at least four valid points about the advantages and disadvantages of working in the profit and nonprofit sectors. This whole unit is designed for student success. There is really no opportunity for failure if they try.

School/Home Connection:

Parents and community members will be the audience.

Cross-Curriculum Extensions:

Provide time at the end of the performance for the audience to ask questions of the performers.
