Unit Overview:

Students will examine models of philanthropy in literature, in history, and in modern day life.  The unit will also describe how traditions help form strong communities.  The students will read children’s literature with a quilting theme to introduce basic concepts of philanthropy in the African American Community.

Unit Purpose:

Students will understand the vocabulary of philanthropy and the importance of the tradition of philanthropy to the community and civil society. They will listen to and discuss a literature book about philanthropy in the African American community that will enhance the student’s understanding of the democratic tradition of philanthropy.

Unit Objectives:

The learner will:

  • recognize acts of philanthropy in literature.

  • distinguish between examples of philanthropy in stories and philanthropy in everyday life.

  • use philanthropic vocabulary correctly in complete sentences and draw a picture to illustrate the concept.

  • explain philanthropic terms to others.

  • identify examples of philanthropy in the family and community.

  • compare volunteer activities people do today with activities done in an earlier time.

Unit Assessment:

An optional, informal assessment is included.
