Learners will develop a working knowledge of the vocabulary associated with philanthropy and awareness of the rich history of philanthropy in the United States. Learners will understand the importance of working together for the common good. They will create persuasive radio public service announcements about a philanthropic organization and its mission, and justify the personal choice of an organization they would like to support with time (volunteerism) or treasure.
The learner will:
- define philanthropy.
- develop awareness of the individual philanthropists and the causes they support.
- use philanthropy vocabulary words: civic responsibility, common good, foundation, non-profit sector.
- research a philanthropic organization and its mission.
- create a persuasive radio advertisement for a nonprofit organization.
- choose an organization to personally support with a donation of time or treasure and justify the choice.

I am taking a graduate class on Social Responsibility. The facilitator directed us to your website. I have chosen this lesson plan as a springboard to be used in my Family and Consumer Science classes. Each quarter my 8th grade students research local organizations, take part in a fundraising drive, and donate our profits. Four local organizations will benefit this year. Thank you for the great ideas and resources.
