printEmail this Unit Overview

Unit Overview:

This unit is about learners becoming good stewards of the environment‘s natural resources, not only in areas recognized as being unique areas of natural resources, such as our National Parks and Wildernesses, but also good stewards of the environment in homes, schools, and communities.

Unit Purpose:

The purpose of this unit is to assist the learner in developing a deeper understanding of what it means to be an environmental steward and to apply this knowledge, by means of conservation and recycling, to identify environmental misuse of natural resources as found in his/her home, school, and community.

Focus Question: How can I become a steward of our Earth’s natural resources and effect positive change in my home, school, and community?”

Unit Objectives:

The learner will:

  • develop an awareness of the need to conserve and recycle air and water.
  • discover the water cycle and photosynthesis as nature’s way of recycling and revitalizing itself.
  • understand how individuals contribute to the problem of misuse of our natural resources and how they can help alleviate misuse.
  • investigate environments where natural resources are being misused.
  • work in troupes to identify and reflect on necessities for survival.
  • identify with National Parks Rules and regulations and the need for them
  • identify the natural resources in National Parks.
  • define stewardship and common good.
  • determine the role everyone plays as steward of the common good.
  • identify the connection between rules and regulations, the common good and stewardship.
  • understand that rules and regulations regarding the use of natural resources apply in all environments.
  • experience first hand misuse of the environment.
  • note similarities and differences of environmental misuses.
  • self-select, develop, and implement a service plan to impact the environment in a positive way..

Service Experience:

Although lessons in this unit contain service project examples, decisions about service plans and implementation should be made by students, as age appropriate.

The learners will conduct a survey in their homes that will indicate where natural resources, water and air, could be better conserved.
The learners will be involved in the self-selecting, developing and enacting a service plan to provide an positive impact on the natural resources found in their selected environment.

Unit Assessment:

The extent and depth of the learners’ understanding of environmental stewardship for the common good as evidenced in their participation in class discussion and activities and the successful completion of their serviced project form the basis of assessment.

School/Home Connection:

Interactive Parent / Student Homework
The learners will be involved in selecting, developing and enacting a service plan intended to provide a positive impact in the environment.

The development and design of a motto that could be used by the various National Parks to remind campers and hikers to be responsible citizens for the common good while in National Park areas is assigned as homework.  Also assigned is learner observation and note-taking pertaining to what they observe in the environments of their home, school, community that does not reflect good stewardship of our Earth’s natural resources
