Lesson 5: Treasuring a Trash-less Tomorrow
Handout 1

A Plan of Action

You have just been hired as part of a marketing design team.  It is the responsibility of your team to design a marketing plan for our upcoming Art Exhibit and Auction.  The goal is to hire the design team that has the “catchiest” and most well organized campaign so you will be competing against several other teams.  You are working under a deadline because the company is asking for all ideas to be presented on ____________.

Things to Consider

Publicity

Focus on ways to get people to come to the Art Exhibit and Auction.  Your plan might include making contact with the local radio stations and newspapers, as well as local businesses.  You will want an advertising flyer and a written ad for advertising in the newspaper and on the radio.  You will also want to plan some type of advertising to put around the facility on the day of the event and possibly signs placed along the route to the facility.  You will need a “welcoming” or introduction poster to be placed at the entrance.

The Exhibition

Designing the exhibition can be very time consuming.  You have to be familiar enough with the space to decide the best set up and arrangement for each of the pieces.  You focus on where to put the pieces as well as which pieces go best next to each other.  You will also need to be aware of any obstacles in your space, such as permanent fixtures or furniture.  Try to set things up so that any these obstacles are not in the physical or visual path of the viewers. You will also need to consider any furniture, materials or tools that are necessary for the display.

Additional Considerations
Another element to consider will be the staff that is there to greet the guests. (You may only choose to have “greeters” on the day of the auction.) You may also add any or all of the following to your plan:  Auction paddles or something for the buyers to use during the auction to signify that they are bidding, name plates for each displayed piece, special invitations for important guests, name tags for the staff, designing a bill of sale for buyers to be used as a tax write-off, and refreshments. You may also want a special box and sign for donations.
