Growing an Environmental Steward
Unit of 3 lessons
printEmail this Unit Overview

Unit Purpose:

The purpose of this unit is to assist the learner in developing a deeper understanding of what it means to be a steward of the environment and to apply this knowledge to identified environmental problems as they relate to landscaping and gardening.

Focus Question: “How can I, as one person, become a steward of my environment and affect positive change?”

Unit Objectives:

The learner will:

  • explain the meaning of environmental stewardship.
  • articulate an understanding that one person can make a difference.
  • identify ways in which they can personally be an environmental steward.
  • describe conservation practices for a local landscape garden.
  • analyze conservation practices for a local landscape garden.
  • apply conservation practices to their own home landscape garden.
  • access and explore a landscape garden design in the school/community.
  • develop a landscape garden design.
  • implement a landscape garden design.
  • assess, evaluate, and reflect on the completed project.

Service Experience:

Although lessons in this unit contain service project examples, decisions about service plans and implementation should be made by students, as age appropriate.

The purpose of this lesson is for the learners to experience putting to use, in their school and/or community, what they have learned about environmental stewardship, landscape design and gardening. Learners will identify an agency in their community for the implementation of their “Landscape Garden Makeover” design.

Unit Assessment:

Informal and formal assessments are included with each lesson.

School/Home Connection:

Interactive Parent / Student Homework:

  • By involving family members in the completion of the Backyard Conservation Project checklist, the learners will identify one backyard conservation problem at their home. They will propose a feasible ways of implementing any of the gardening best practices related to the identified problem.
