
One 30 minute class period
The learner will:
- articulate the role rules play in their home, school, playground and the games they play.
- recognize the consequences of following or not following the established rules of their home, school, playground and the games they play.
Anticipatory Set:
Ask the learners if they would like to learn a new game that’s really, really fun!!! Anticipating a positive response, tell them that they will be able to play this game tomorrow, if they know the …?. Point to the word “rules” on the display board and have the learners finish your statement by reading or telling them the word is rules. Ask the learners to share with you what the word means. Write on the board the words and phrases they use to describe the word. Read and discuss the story “Know and Follow Rules” by Cheri J. Meiners and Meredith Johnson.
- Next to the word “rules” on the display board write the word “cooperate” and have the learners practice saying the word. Share with them that this big word is used when someone knows and follows/obeys the rules. To “cooperate” means getting along with others, and knowing and obeying rules helps us do that.
- Have the learners share some of the rules they have in their homes and in their classroom. Ask why it might be very important to cooperate with these rules, and what could happen (besides possible consequences) if they don’t cooperate with these rules.
- Have the learners review some playground rules and why it is important that everyone cooperate with these rules. Hold up a variety of sports balls (soccer ball, football, baseball, etc.) and ask the learners to share with you some of the rules representing these sports and why it is important if you are playing these sports that every one cooperate with the rules of the game.
- Remind the learners that tomorrow you will share with them the rules of a new game that they will be playing!
