Duration:

Two fifty minute class periods

  • prepare an introduction to one essay

  • discuss assigned readings

  • determine how American philanthropists contributed in building and sustaining a democratic society.

Materials:

  • Resources necessary to take notes and construct an introductory presentation to fulfill their facilitation responsibility.

Instructional Procedure(s):

List the key terms covered in Lesson One (Key Concepts in a Democratic Society) on the board. Ask the students how each one is vital in achieving and sustaining a representative democracy.

  • Divide the students into four groups and assign a Homework reading from Lesson Three to each group.

  • Ask each group to be responsible for facilitating a class discussion of the writing by determining the key points in the writing and preparing at least three discussion questions to explore those points. Tell the students to use the concepts just reviewed as they plan the discussion.

  • Each group will also be responsible for creation of 10 multiple-choice questions over the reading they are facilitating.

  • Allow each group to facilitate the discussion on their assigned reading. Ask one member of the group to take notes on the discussion, on chart paper or in a display area. (These notes can be reviewed or reproduced as study notes for the class prior to taking the multiple choice quiz, if desired.)

Assessment:

  • Students study guides well be visually checked. In addition, students will be assessed on their ability to lead a discussion and present the highlights of their assigned readings.

  • Students will take a multiple-choice test constructed from the submissions from the discussion group planning.

  • Unit Post-Test: Return the students' Pre-Test taken in Lesson One (Attachment One).  Have them redefine the key terms in the “post test” space provided.
