Unit of 4 lessons
printEmail this Unit Overview

Unit Overview:

Students will consider a project to help those who are sick and in hospitals. Considering the needs of the recipients, they will write stories to help them. Using the steps of the writing process, they will edit their stories through self-correction and peer editing. They will enhance the written word with illustration, completing the booklet. Students will deliver the booklets to the hospital and reflect on the project.

Unit Purpose:

Students will go through the complete writing process from writing rough drafts to editing and illustrating their stories. The stories will be turned into booklets which will be given to children who are ill, so they can read or hear them during their recovery. The learners will reflect on the value of their contributions.

Unit Objectives:

The learners will:

  • describe the benefits of giving without expecting something in return.
  • write stories to match the needs of their recipients.
  • create a rough draft and revise it.
  • self-correct errors and give advice for improvement to another writer.
  • enhance the written story by adding artwork.
  • identify benefits to the community from the service project.

Service Experience:

Although lessons in this unit contain service project examples, decisions about service plans and implementation should be made by students, as age appropriate.

Students will go through the steps of the writing process to create stories for ill children in the local hospital. They will illustrate the stories to enhance the written word and turn the stories into booklets. The booklets will be delivered to the children's wing of the local hospital.

Unit Assessment:

Students will reflect on the needs of their recipients and match the needs of the recipients with their stories. They will conduct self-corrections and give advice for improvement to other writers. They will reflect on how the community benefits from their service.

School/Home Connection:

  • "Copy-and-Paste" Class/School Newsletter Information Insert:
Students will be exploring the writing process, from writing rough drafts to making self-corrections and reviewing the writing of a partner. The stories will have artwork added to enhance the ideas and will be turned into attractive booklets given to the children in the local hospital.

  • Interactive Parent / Student Homework:
Parents will be asked to discuss the completed project with their child and determine how the learner has benefited from the project. The learner should share how the community benefits from the work of the students. (Lesson Four: We Hope This Helps)
