Purpose:
This lesson will develop children's awareness of giving to others with nothing expected in return.
Duration:
One 60 Minute Class Period
Objectives:
The learner will:
- describe the benefits of giving.
Materials:
- Television
- VCR
- Movie: "The Wizard of Oz" (see Bibliographical References)
- Chart Paper
- Markers
Instructional Procedure(s):
Anticipatory Set:
Show a video clip of the Wizard of Oz. Pre-set the movie to the place where the tin man, the scarecrow and the lion are trying to sneak into the Wicked Witch's castle to free Dorothy. Ask the children why the three characters were risking their lives to go into the castle. (They were trying to save the life of a dear friend. They were trying to help Dorothy.) · Identify times students have given / received philanthropy. How did those you helped feel? How did you feel?
Assessment:
Have students write about and illustrate one good reason why someone might give or volunteer to do something for others.

Comments
The students found the video clip motivating. They were able to make the connections to helping. The web was a very appropriate strategy and the children were able to brainstorm many ways to help.
(The positive aspects of using this lesson was) it got students to reflect on ways in which they have participated in philanthropic activities and to discuss how their efforts affected others. It allowed students to see how easy and yet beneficial philanthropy can be.
Students realized that they do philanthropic acts on a regular basis, but they didn't know that until it was explained to them. Enjoyed writing and drawing the picture.
(The positive aspect of using this lesson is) it creates a community and teaches students how to be more aware of their feelings and the feeling of others.
(Ths lesson was) Extremely engaging. Real world application. Fun. Great objectives.
(The positive aspect of using this lesson was) students got a chance to see and learn about giving and helping others and how it enhances the lives and self-esteem of others.
