Philanthropy Framework

Purpose:

This lesson will develop children's awareness of giving to others with nothing expected in return.

Duration:

One 60 Minute Class Period

Objectives:

The learner will:

  • describe the benefits of giving.

Materials:

  • Television

  • VCR

  • Movie: "The Wizard of Oz" (see Bibliographical References)

  • Chart Paper

  • Markers

Instructional Procedure(s):

    Anticipatory Set:
Show a video clip of the Wizard of Oz. Pre-set the movie to the place where the tin man, the scarecrow and the lion are trying to sneak into the Wicked Witch's castle to free Dorothy. Ask the children why the three characters were risking their lives to go into the castle. (They were trying to save the life of a dear friend. They were trying to help Dorothy.) · Identify times students have given / received philanthropy. How did those you helped feel? How did you feel?

  • Brainstorm ways that people help others and why doing so helps them. See examples below.

  • Are the things that the students came up with things that children can do? (Some of them are.) Can the students think of other ways that they can help? Give them five minutes to share ideas with a partner. (It could be folding laundry, giving clothes that don't fit anymore to Goodwill, or taking books that you don't read anymore to a children's hospital or local day care facility.) Add their new ideas to the list.

  • Ask students if they think we should do something to help someone else. (If they don't say "yes," find a way to convince them that they should.)

  • Make the suggestion to write stories for children who are very ill. It won't help them get better, like medicine can. How can it help them? (It will boost their emotional spirit. It will make them smile, which will make them feel better.)

  • Have the class agree on that idea. Then begin charting ideas that would be appropriate for stories. Explain that tomorrow they will begin writing their stories.

Assessment:

Have students write about and illustrate one good reason why someone might give or volunteer to do something for others.

The students found the video clip motivating. They were able to make the connections to helping. The web was a very appropriate strategy and the children were able to brainstorm many ways to help.
