Philanthropy Framework

Purpose:

To encourage students to use philanthropic behavior during the course of each day.

Duration:

Five-minute discussion every two weeks (17 different activities)

Objectives:

The learner will:

  • be able to demonstrate appropriate behaviors that display positive attitudes toward themselves and others.
  • be able state the meaning or give an example of each caring phrase.
  • be able to apply the learned activities to everyday life.

Service Experience:

Although this lesson contains a service project example, decisions about service plans and implementation should be made by students, as age appropriate.
Students will be able to practice carrying out the various activities during the school day.

Materials:

  • Container for housing the Caring Cards
  • Suggestions for the Caring Container List (see Attachment One)

Suggestions for the Caring Container

Instructional Procedure(s):

Anticipatory Set:

Shake the container to motivate students and get their attention. Introduce the object as the class' "Caring Container." Emphasize the importance of caring and sharing to keep a peaceful classroom. Explain that there will be a new activity every two weeks.

  • Write the caring phrases on index cards and place them in a container.
  • Ask a volunteer to select a caring card from the container.
  • Copy the phrase on the board or overhead projector.
  • Class will read the activity and discuss what they are asked to do.
  • Discussion will include giving examples to ensure students understand what they need to do.
  • Students will carry out the activity at every opportunity during the focus time of a two-week period. However, the goal is to encourage them to use caring behavior throughout the year and beyond.

Assessment:

Write caring phrases on the board and have students either write or draw an example of them performing that activity in the classroom. Evaluate the appropriateness of the behavior the students chose to illustrate in terms of its match to the caring phrase and the completeness of the response.

Base assessment on teacher observation to see if the students carry out the activities during the focus time (two weeks), and beyond the designated time.
