Unit Overview:

Students are introduced to the concept acting philanthropically for the common good to promote the common good for the community. By learning about Native American traditions of philanthropy, students are encouraged to determine local needs and suggest solutions for their own community.

Unit Purpose:

To examine traditions of philanthropy-giving and sharing of time talent, and treasure for the common good, as a bridge between community need and private action.

Unit Objectives:

The learner will:

  • define and give examples of philanthropy in home, school, and community
  • examine some Native American traditions of philanthropy
  • distinguish between heroes and celebrity

Service Experience:

Although lessons in this unit contain service project examples, decisions about service plans and implementation should be made by students, as age appropriate.

Volunteer their time and talents to earn money to donate to a local charity. 

Unit Assessment:

Student generated Venn diagrams and writing samples and analysis of a community need

Notes for Teaching:

A web search for material on the schools' community history (pictures and stories) in the early 1900s and now will enhance the unit.
