Remember...Reflection
Unit of 3 lessons
printEmail this Unit Overview

Unit Overview:

This unit uses literature to explore feelings and past experiences (acts of kindness). It also looks at what is learned from these experiences and the use of questioning as the basis for understanding the concept of reflection.

Unit Purpose:

This unit will use the reflection process to increase the learners' understanding of feelings, past experiences and consequences of actions. They will understand what makes a good interview and story, and conduct an interview of a family member. Students will use reflection as a learning tool.

Unit Objectives:

The learners will:
  • list and describe words from a story that evoke "feelings."
  • define and give examples of philanthropy.
  • describe past experiences and their consequences in literature and a personal context.
  • conduct an interview and write the story.
  • practice reflection.

Service Experience:

Although lessons in this unit contain service project examples, decisions about service plans and implementation should be made by students, as age appropriate.

Students will write a book containing family stories of philanthropy and share the book with another class or the school library.

Unit Assessment:

  • Learner Reflection Sheet from Lesson Three: Interview For Reflection
  • Teacher observation
  • Interview rubric
  • Learners' active participation in lessons

School/Home Connection:

  • Parent information letter from Lesson One: Tell Me A Story—Feelings
  • Parent or family member interview on past childhood experience that included an act of kindness from Lesson Three: Interview For Reflection

Notes for Teaching:

Teach the unit at a pace that is best for your learners. Feel free to improvise. Use additional resource materials and your special brand of creativity. Have fun!
