Unit of 3 lessons
printEmail this Unit Overview

Unit Overview:

Learners will explore the issues of religious diversity by dismantling the myths of prejudice, discovering the root causes of prejudice, by undertaking an overview of the three religious groups and completing a service project, the goal of which will be to teach other learners the value of diversity and being tolerant of others.

Unit Purpose:

Learners will explore the issues of religious diversity by dismantling the myths of prejudice through understanding and identifying the causes of prejudice. Learners will complete a summative review of the three major religious groups and will prepare displays to make other learners aware of the common ethics and values all share while celebrating their differences.

Unit Objectives:

The learners will:

  • define and effectively demonstrate vocabulary of the lessons.
  • identify various groups who have historically struggled to win the right to be heard.
  • identify acts of philanthropy in the struggle against prejudice and persecution.
  • identify and recognize prejudices, discrimination and stereotyping in history, society, community, school and literature.
  • identify how prejudice denies human dignity and has historically fostered persecution.
  • compare and contrast the Jewish, Christian and Muslim religions, and complete a Venn diagram illustrating their likenesses and differences.
  • analyze the elements of prejudice and attitudes that led to the Holocaust.
  • identify ways in which individuals aided Jewish people in Nazi-occupied Europe.
  • discuss the shared experience of discrimination as it pertains to all types of prejudice.
  • discuss the events of September 11 as a catalyst fostering fear and hatred of Muslims in America and abroad.
  • design and implement a service activity, i.e. showcases, bulletin boards to enhance school community awareness of and appreciation for religious diversity.

Service Experience:

Although lessons in this unit contain service project examples, decisions about service plans and implementation should be made by students, as age appropriate.

Learners will prepare multiple displays for the school community, demonstrating the diversity and commonalities shared by the three major religious groups.

Unit Assessment:

The assessment should provide the teacher with feedback concerning how well the learner understands the stated lesson objectives. It may include such items as evaluations of student work and/or performance, traditional tests, teacher observation, scoring guides, test answer guides and rubrics. One part of the assessment should include student self-evaluation through reflection.

  • Each learner will write a journal entry daily discussing what he or she has learned from this lesson. The entry must have the following elements:

A daily record of activities in complete sentences
A self assessment of the learner's activities for the day
Each entry must have one reflective sentence about their feelings on their research and/or their attitudes.
  • Instructor-devised instruments to measure content

  • Evaluation of each group presentation

  • See Lesson One: What is Prejudice? for Paragraph Rubric

  • Instructor observations

  • Successful completion of Venn Diagram (Attachment One: Religions of Our Diverse Community from Lesson Three: Religious Prejudice)
  • School/Home Connection:

    • Interactive Parent / Student Homework:
      Lesson One:
Have the learners ask their parent/guardian to share with them any instance they know of that would demonstrate bias, racism, prejudice or stereotype. Have the students write these examples on a sheet of paper, in complete sentences, to bring into class to share.
