Purpose:

Students will produce a set of posters that will serve as a reminder of the classroom rules.

Duration:

One Forty-Minute Class Period

Objectives:

The learner will:

illustrate a classroom rule.
explain how a rule helps the common good.

Service Experience:

Although this lesson contains a service project example, decisions about service plans and implementation should be made by students, as age appropriate.

To share their knowledge of rules and how they help the common good, students may select one general school rule and design posters to be posted throughout the school as a reminder to other students of the benefits of following school rules.

Materials:

A variety of posters with easy-to-interpret messages (e.g., Don't Pollute, READ!, Say No To Drugs)
12 x 18" white drawing paper for each student

Instructional Procedure(s):

Anticipatory Set:

Walk students to nearby posters displayed in the school building. Read the messages to the class as they view them. Return to the classroom.

Display a variety of posters with specific messages. Pair students and ask them each to share with their neighbor which poster they liked. Ask individuals to share their partner's response. Ask students to explain the messages of two of the posters with their neighbor. Ask students to share their partner's response.
Discuss what made messages easy to understand.
Explain to students that they are going to help each other remember the rules of the classroom by making posters to post in the room. Allow children to volunteer to select a rule to illustrate. Be sure all rules are included. Give each student a 12" x 18" sheet of white drawing paper. Let them illustrate their chosen rule. (The teacher should label each poster.) When finished, have students show their posters and explain how the rule helps the common good.
Optional: Students may design posters for the general school population in the building regarding a school rule. See Experiential Component.

Assessment:

Teacher observation of student participation: Did the student tell his/her neighbor which poster he/she preferred? Was the student able to explain the message of at least one poster?

2	The picture clearly illustrates a rule (or the student can explain how the picture illustrates the rule). The student can orally explain how the rule meets the common good.
1	The picture clearly illustrates a rule (or the student can explain how the picture illustrates the rule) but the student cannot orally explain how the rule meets the common good. Or The student can orally explain how the rule meets the common good but the student's picture does not illustrate a rule.
0	The picture does not illustrate a rule and the student cannot orally explain how the rule meets the common good.
