Learning to Give:
- EDUCATES youth about philanthropy, the nonprofit and volunteer sector, and the importance of giving, their time, talent and treasure for the common good ( knowledge),
- DEVELOPS philanthropic behavior and experience ( skills), and,
- EMPOWERS youth to take voluntary citizen action for the common good in their classrooms, their lives and their communities ( behavior).
Learning to Give provides quality content, activities and resources for parents who homeschool their children. Research indicates that homeschooled children engage in more days of community interaction and service than traditionally educated students. Learning to Give units teach the importance of “Voluntary Action for the Common Good in a Democratic Society” within the framework of standards-based lesson plans.
Students should understand the head part as well as the heart part of volunteering and service—why they should be a part of their community, why they should act for the common good, and how participating in their community dovetails with participation in the democratic process. With creative connections to Service Learning, Character Education and Civic Engagement, Learning to Give lessons add a “deep democracy” component that introduce students to the theory and practice of volunteer citizen engagement—as volunteers, donors, and civic activists. Content from history, geography, government, and economics, including citizenship skills, such as discussion and debate, is used to teach young people higher-level thinking skills in the context of creating and maintaining a civil society.
