Read 'n' Give--Sharing Our Treasure

The purpose of this lesson is for students to deliver the books to the recipients and spend some time reading with their partners. Students return to class to reflect on their experiences and celebrate the impact of the service project.

Objectives 

The learner will:

  • share the collected books with the partner school or organization.
  • communicate his or her feelings about the service project.
  • celebrate a job well done!
Materials 
  • a medium-sized beachball (or other type of ball) with reflective questions written on it (see Teacher Preparation).
  • decorations for the celebration activity (if desired).
  • any other materials needed for celebration - as determined by students during project planning (See Lesson Two)
Teacher Preparation 

Delivery of Donated Books: Prior to this lesson, arrange the field trip for students to share books with a partner school or organization. Plan the structure of the time together, which may include reading and reading activities.  Alternatively, a representative from the receiving organization may pick up the books and talk to the class about the impact of the service project.  For the celebration, invite community partners and thank them formally for their assistance with the project.

Reflection Ball: In advance of the celebration, write reflection questions on a beach ball using permanent marker. (See Day Two of Instructional Procedures for sample reflection questions.)

  1. Anticipatory Set:

    Review with students the plans that were created on the Project Plan sheet in Lesson Two. Tell the students that this is the day they share their donated books. Ask them how they feel about what they have done and what they will do today.

    Day One: With the partner organization who is receiving the books--if children are present.

  2. Introduce the students as a whole group.

  3. Allow the recipients to select a book of their choice from the box of books containing the books with student-made covers. It is helpful to spread out the books so they can see their choices clearly.

  4. Pair students together based on the students' book selection. Have the partners read together.

  5. Complete any planned activities together.

  6. If time permits, students can rotate or select another book to read together.

  7. Day Two: Reflection

  8. Put students into a large circle. (They will be tossing the beach ball to each other.)

  9. Show the students the beach ball with reflective questions written on it, and read some of the questions out loud. Possible reflection questions include the following:

    • What did you like best about the service project?
    • What did you learn by participating in the project?
    • What are two words that describe how you feel about the project?
    • How do you think the recipients of our books felt?
    • Why was it important that we worked as a team to plan the project?
    • How could we make this project better if we were to do it again?
  10. Explain to students that they will toss the ball around the circle. As they catch the ball, they read the question that their right index finger is touching. The person who catches the ball responds to that question and throws the ball to someone else. It is okay to have different students answer the same questions.

  11. Allow students to participate until each student has answered a question.

  12. Following the reflection activity, acknowledge the success of the service project with a celebration. Celebration activities will vary, based on the project plan, but can include a pizza party, ice cream social, a snack, etc.

  13. If community partners participated in the project, they may be invited to the celebration and share their feelings about the activity.
