Unit Overview 

Students identify the mission of Save the Children and write about the need for saving children around the world. They read and discuss children's right to access to health as required by the United Nations' Convention on the Rights of the Child. They view resources about the health workers who are saving children's lives across the world, and students work in small groups to research and report on five featured countries. They learn that they can support these health workers by choosing a service project to take action for children's health.

Service Experience 
Students choose how they want to take action to help reduce child mortality in the world's poorest countries. They may choose from ideas here or come up with their own: Advocacy Day (March), World Water Day (March), World Malaria Day (April), Mothers' Day (May), World Food Day (October), World Pneumonia Day (November), World Toilet Day (November)

In this lesson, students learn that human rights laws include "conventions" that protect children's rights. They identify the mission of Save the Children and recognize the need for taking action to save children around the world.

This lesson introduces the health workers who are saving children's lives across the world. Students learn what types of preventable diseases threaten babies and children and what the workers do. Students work in small groups to research and report on statistics about five featured countries. They learn that they can support these health workers by sharing their time and talent.

In this lesson students choose a service project to take action for children's health in the poorest countries. Many ideas are suggested related to Save the Children's Newborn and Child Survival Campaign. The suggested projects are calendar events and can be found in the Service Experience and Handouts. Follow the service-learning plan of action to guide students in selecting the project that fits their time and talents.
