Youth as Philanthropists

Objectives:

  • To enable participants to acknowledge what they have received in the training
  • To commit to further action for the common good

Activity Theme:

“It is by spending one’s self that one becomes rich.”

~ Sarah Bernhardt

The facilitator briefly discusses how the participants have experienced a cycle of philanthropy: they have received things from the organization/community such as knowledge, encouragement, funding, training, and they have given back to the organization/community. To celebrate these achievements and commit to future action, participants will now have an opportunity to share what they have gotten from their training and the time they have spent together.

Activity

The facilitator asks the participants to sit or stand in a circle and explains:

“The dollar bill, which represents all resources we have received and given, will be passed around the circle. When one receives the dollar bill, they share what they have gotten out of the training. As you pass the dollar, share a personal, specific commitment you have made to keep on doing philanthropic actions for your organization and community.”

FOR EXAMPLE: When Bob receives the dollar, he says, “I realized when doing the Lottery Activity that I was wasting a lot of money that could be used to help my organization. I have decided to save $5 per week from my paycheck and at the end of the year, make a contribution to my organization.”
