Standard PI 01. Reasons for Individual Philanthropy
Benchmark E.7 Give classroom examples of when a student does not need the teacher's permission to act philanthropically.
This lesson encourages children to think of the feelings of others. They discover that it feels good to make others feel good.
The learner will:
- give compliments to others in the group.
- respond appropriately when receiving a compliment.
The facilitator looks around the group for smiling faces, attention, kindness, or postures of involvement. Say something like the following to show appreciation for them: "Your attitude makes it a pleasure to be in this group."
Ask the group, "What makes this group/meeting space a good place to be?" Listen to their responses and add, "Are there things you can say or do for each other to make this place good for all?"
Being part of a community means that the members support and care for one another. Everyone sees themselves as an important part of the whole group. We each have a responsibility to make that true. We need to care about and take care of each other. Giving compliments is an example of caring and taking care.
Discuss the meaning of the word compliment. Give examples and ask for more examples. Discuss how it feels to receive a compliment. Talk about the value of saying thank you when you receive a compliment. Stress that a compliment given to another person should be true.
Brainstorm lots of compliments with the group. This can range from "I like your hair today." to "I noticed that you helped someone today." Build understanding of the variety of nice ways we can build up members of our shared community. Leave the brainstormed list up on the wall.
Some compliment starters may help:
- I like you because…
- You acted like a friend when…
- Thank you for…
- I like the way you ...
- I noticed ...
- That is a nice ... (haircut, shirt)
Pracice together: Have participants take turns paying compliments to each other in front of the group and saying thank you for the compliment. Make sure everyone gives and gets compliments over a given time.
Ask participants to describe how it felt to receive a compliment. Ask them how giving a compliment to someone made them feel. Ask participants to explain how the giving and receiving of compliments improves the climate of the group or community.
