This lesson emphasizes that each individual must take action. After reflecting upon all that they learned earlier in the unit, students will have the opportunity to plan and execute a tikkun olam project of their choosing to help the local community.
Students will research some local community organizations to better understand the real application of the terms "philanthropy" and "hero."
Unit: Make That Change
After designing their own philanthropic projects, students will select one service project to implement. Learners will collaboratively select and design a service plan for implementation and assess their designed service plan using a learner designed rubric and project reflection.
To have the learners analyze, interpret and evaluate an annual report of a foundation or nonprofit organization and answer questions in relation to it, and to participate in class discussions regarding budgets, fundraising, and distribution of funds.
Students read and discuss the folktale "The Drum," a folktale from India. Students determine the central message of selfless giving (giving without expectation of reward) and write and produce a play that communicates that message clearly. They perform it for an appropriate audience.

This lesson will emphasize that beliefs influence our actions. Students will research contemporary examples of individuals acting philanthropically in accordance with a Core Democratic Value.
