SEL Definition of Relationship Skills:
According to CASEL
(Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning)
"The ability to establish and maintain healthy and rewarding relationships with diverse individuals and groups. This includes communicating clearly, listening actively, cooperating, resisting inappropriate social pressure, negotiating conflict constructively, and seeking and offering help when needed."
According to Learning to Give - SEL in the context of teaching generosity:
"The ability to give back to the community as a means to help others, which in turn makes you feel good inside. When you feel good, you make others feel good, too."
Activities to Build Relationship Skills through Community and Generosity:
Conflict Map Activity
Read the book One Plastic Bag by Miranda Paul (there are YouTube options available). After reading the book, use the graphic organizer Conflict Map from Read, Write, Think to determine what the conflict (problem) was that needed to be resolved and how the main character in the book resolved it. Discuss as a group. See video for follow along activity directions.
