Unit Overview

Students trace the history of giving in America and connect examples to Core Democratic Values (settlers, patriots, Civil Rights Movement). They examine mission statements of current nonprofit organizations for examples of democratic values and relate democracy themes to philanthropy themes. It is through the activities of the nonprofit and volunteer sector that the fundamental beliefs of the Core Democratic Values are passed on from one generation to another.

Service Experience
Students will complete a needs assessment in their local community, create a plan to address the identified needs, and implement the plan.
