This unit encourages children to think about respect for pets and what they bring to the lives of human beings. They will understand that by providing animals with basic needs and treating animals with kindness and respect, they are demonstrating responsible pet care, environmental stewardship and acting as responsible citizens of the community.
This lesson encourages children to think about animals and animal welfare, particularly as it applies to pets. It will help them understand that animals need and want many of the basic things that humans need and want, and how humans can help provide those things for their pets.
Explore animal welfare through literature and analysis of wants and needs of people and pets.
This lesson will enable learners to discuss what people need to provide for pets to insure their welfare. Learners will use vocabulary and ideas from previous lessons to generate a plan to provide care and compassion for shelter pets. The plan will inform and involve schoolmates about pet needs.
