Saving the Monarch
Students learn the concept of environmental stewardship as an act of philanthropy. They learn about the Monarch Butterfly, the four stages of its life cycle, and its dependence on the milkweed plant as a source of energy.
The purpose of this lesson is to introduce the learners to the concept of Environmental Stewardship, community and how making an area beautiful is an act of philanthropy. Learners will look at the Monarch Butterfly and the four stages of its life cycle. They will also discover that it is dependent on the milkweed plant as a source of energy.
Learners will review the information that they learned in the previous lesson. They will demonstrate understanding of the life cycle of the Monarch Butterfly by using different types of pasta to represent the different stages of the butterfly’s life cycle.
This lesson will culminate with the learners raising money in order to buy milkweed plants or seeds to plant in a Monarch Butterfly garden. They will appreciate that caring for the environment and the plants and animals is good stewardship of the earth and the civic responsibility of everyone.
