We the Community - Past, Present and Future
Students will gain an awareness and understanding of philanthropy and nonprofit organizations. They will create a book to be shared with the community that describes different people and organizations with the purpose of increasing civic virtue and philanthropy. The students will also reflect on their own past, present and future philanthropic acts.
Students become familiar with philanthropy-related terms and increase their familiarity of past and present people and places within the United States and their local community. Students consider the impact of people who give to the community and realize that many places in the U.S. and in their communities are there as a result of philanthropy.
The students gain awareness about the work of local nonprofit organizations by interviewing representatives from three organizations. Students write about the results of the interviews to summarize the goals and impact of the organizations on the community.
The students will be introduced to the concept of civic virtue and the positive contributions of community nonprofits.
Students will identify their civic responsibility to their community by creating their own Microsoft PowerPoint (or similar presentation software) slide show depicting their past, present and future actions.
