Unit Overview

For learners to be good stewards of the Earth they need to learn about personal actions that impact the environment. The children learn about ocean animals and the ocean environment, and answer the question: What can we do to take care of the ocean environment? These discussions lead to a writing activity reaching out to an organization for more information about oceans.

Service Experience
The learners will create a diorama demonstrating what they have learned about the ocean environment.  They will share their creations with another class and “teach” them about pollution and ways to help keep the oceans clean. They will also write letters to various agencies telling them what they have learned and asking what else they can do to help take care of the ocean environment.

The lesson helps children understand that the plants and animals that live in the ocean depend on a clean environment. They continue to develop the concept of stewardship of the Earth. Children will learn that the animals in the ocean are capable of cleaning a small portion of the ocean, like we clean our  homes, but they need our help to keep the ocean clean too.

This lesson will demonstrate to the children that animals need a safe environment just like humans do. They will discover that even small creatures can make a difference in an ocean environment, just like they can make a difference in helping to protect the ocean environment by not littering or polluting the water.
