Unit Overview:

The lessons in this unit are designed to help learners recognize and identify the nonprofit organizations in the community, learn about the different job opportunities in nonprofit organizations, understand that these different jobs may require different abilities and skills, fill out a resume/application, and prepare for a job interview.

Unit Purpose:

The lessons in this unit are designed to help learners, using the Action Without Borders/Idealist.org Web Site, become more aware of how nonprofit organizations benefit communities, recognize that different job opportunities are available in the nonprofit sector and understand that these jobs may require different abilities and skills.

Unit Objectives:

The learner will:

  • review the definitions of nonprofit organizations and for-profit organizations.
  • identify and research nonprofit organizations in the local community using a variety of sources, including the web site  http://Idealist.org.
  • graph nonprofit organizations according to category.
  • identify job opportunities in the nonprofit sector and some of the specific interests, abilities and skills these job opportunities require, using the Idealist.org Web site.
  • complete a resume for employment in a nonprofit organization.
  • understand personal appearance and hygiene expected for an employment interview.

Unit Assessment:

  • Evaluation of student work and performance
  • Teacher observation

Notes for Teaching:

The lessons in this unit are written with the understanding learners know the definition of nonprofit and for profit organizations. Please see http://www.learningtogive.org/materials/vocabulary.asp if learners need a better understanding of nonprofit or associated vocabulary.

Having a good understanding of this organization and the resources available on the web site will assist in the teaching and learning of this unit.
