Unit Overview:

Unit Purpose:

This unit is intended to show learners how electricity is used, measured, recorded, and calculated. Learners will then research energy conservation and energy efficiency using a lab activity and an internet research assignment. Once learners discover a way to use energy more efficiently by changing the types of light bulbs they use in their house, they will create a presentation to give to members of the community. The presentation is designed to provide information to groups about different types of renewable resources that can be use by a city.  The purpose of this unit is to expose learners to different types of energy sources that produce electricity. They will show how electricity is used, measured, recorded and calculated while exploring how basic energy conservation and energy efficiency choices can impact their family energy costs and reduce the amount of energy consumption. This unit will allow the learners to explore local governments and how to develop an action plan for a city to use alternative energy resources.

Focus Question: Who in a community is responsibility for protecting the resources of the community?  Is it the elected officials, the individual or both?

Unit Objectives:

The learner will:

  • identify how we use energy.
  • learn to read an electric meter.
  • calculate energy consumption.
  • record energy usage in a diary.
  • define stewardship as the careful and responsible management of something entrusted to one's care.
  • compare the advantages and disadvantages of incandescent and compact fluorescent light bulbs.
  • demonstrate the differences between the incandescent and compact fluorescent light bulbs.
  • complete a data table recording temperatures produced by different types of light bulbs.
  • calculate the cost of kilowatt hours for each type bulb.
  • research renewable energy resources.
  • develop an action plan for using renewable resources.
  • present their plan to various groups in the community.

Service Experience:

Although lessons in this unit contain service project examples, decisions about service plans and implementation should be made by students, as age appropriate.

In Lesson Three, the learners will research and develop a city plan for the responsible use of alternative energy resources. They will present their plans to other groups in the school, city or school boards as a simulation. The objective is to persuade those groups to use alternative energy resources.

Unit Assessment:

Collect the learners’ individual diary pages. Evaluate them for completeness. As well as evaluating the group presentations.

School/Home Connection:

Interactive Parent / Student Homework:
See Attachment One, Lesson Two, My Electricity Use Diary. Learners will complete their usage diary at home with their families.  After filling out the diary, the learners should discuss three activities that their family will do together in order to reduce their electricity usage.

See Attachment One, Lesson Three, City Council’s Action Plan. Learners will research renewable sources of energy. The information will be use to develop an Action Plan for the use of these renewable energy resources.

Notes for Teaching:

Check with your local power company to see if they have a discarded electric meter that you might have to use to demonstrate how to read the meter.
Schedule these outside of the classroom presentations in advance of doing the activity in Lesson Three, Light Up Someone’s Life With Knowledge
