Healthy Youth, Healthy Community (6-8)
Students explore healthy living habits for themselves and for their community. They practice making healthy food choices, exercising and helping people of the community do the same. Learners develop a service-learning project based on a community needs assessment.
Students explore the meaning of community and develop a classroom community contract. They examine some choices they make that influence their health.
Students examine elements of healthy living, including a balanced diet and regular physical activity.
Students examine their health culture and survey their home and neighborhood environments to collect information about nutrition and fitness in the community. Students design a comic strip to educate others about healthy eating and exercise.
Students explore the concept of the media’s impact on our healthy body image. They create advertisements that celebrate different bodies’ shapes and sizes and positive messages about healthy choices.
Students explore what it means to be a responsible citizen and identify ways they are responsible at home, in school, and in the community. They create a survey related to community health and poll members of the community to assess needs.
