Young people explore demographics and definitions to better understand some of the disabilities of their peers. They discuss how we can support one another's unique expressions of self.
Unit: It's Goin' Down; The Rain Forest
Learners identify ways for individuals, nonprofits, and governments to take action against excessive destruction of the rainforests of the world.
This is an introduction to the differences and similarities between temperate and tropical rainforests. The group discusses patterns in where rainforests are located, and they begin to research characteristics and gain awareness of their biodiversity.

After reading the book The Librarian of Basra by Jeanette Winter children talk about the importance of books to any community. They discuss ways to take action for the good of the community related to literature.
Unit: Healthy Youth, Healthy Community (9-12)
Students research the practices of healthy exercise. They identify a topic related to good nutrition and personal health and write 3-5 facts to share with the class. They identify nonprofits that work to address related health needs and contact them by phone to ask questions.

Now that the need they want to address is identified, the children meet people in the community who address the need and others who may want to help them with their fundraiser.

Learners increase their reading fluency and awareness of philanthropy by reading to younger children.
Unit: TeachOne: Coming Together for Environmental Action
Learners walk around their neighborhood parks observing plants, use of space, and ways to make the shared space better. They problem-solve about things they can do and then interview and survey others to get ideas and permission to take action.
