Learners will define poverty by listing its characteristics and effects. They will identify organizations which serve those who are in poverty. They will analyze the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and determine whether poverty is a violation of the document’s principles.
Students will listen to a story that illustrates that although we have differences, we are also very similar. They will begin to understand the definitions of diversity and realize that focusing on the differences alone may cause conflict.
Having formulated an initial opinion on whether or not today's Americans exhibit civic virtue, hold a debate to defend their positions and analyze those of others.
Students explore the cultures of different countries through the food, costume, celebrations, geography, education, music, and other features of a chosen country. The lesson requests the use of parent involvement, and culminates in a vivid presentation at a school assembly.
