This lesson will introduce the children to a hero whose actions changed the course of history. Students will describe what they learned about being a hero and relate some of the characteristics of heroes to a personal hero.

Unit: Heroes and Their Impact
Learners identify examples of courage from the actions of Jackie Robinson.
To introduce students to famous people who have acted for the public good and to identify how philanthropy affects the public good.
To allow students to demonstrate their understanding of the concept of philanthropy using sports heroes and develop their personal profile on philanthropy.
Learners will illustrate how Jackie Joyner-Kersee is a motivator, both as an athlete and a philanthropist. She demonstrated acts of kindness for the common good through building youth centers across the nation.
The learners will identify philanthropists and their actions. They will apply this knowledge to recognize local philanthropists and the impact of their actions, and to identify acts of philanthropy they can do.
