Unit: Earth Connections
In this lesson, students will understand how reusing, reducing and recycling can save resources and reduce pollution. They will investigate and begin to strategize about what they can do in their school, homes and community to reduce pollution.
The purpose of this lesson is to explore prejudices and to find ways that philanthropy can promote tolerance and sensitivity toward others.
A picture book provides a discussion starter about ways we work together to address big issues. Students conduct a needs assessment and start a plan of action to address a small need.
The learners will define and understand the meaning of the term “philanthropy” and describe the characteristics of a good citizen relative to democracy and to promoting the public/common good.
Unit: The Power of Children
Students determine which community need should have greatest priority. Once a priority need has been determined, students research organizations that address that community need. The research process will use a student-generated list of questions.
Learners explore what it means to demonstrate civic virtues of justice, kindness, peace, and tolerance as responsible citizens. The students write a goal to practice one of the virtues.
