Learners discover how celebrities demonstrate their caring by giving their time, talent and treasure and taking action for specific causes. It gives the learners an opportunity to begin to think of what they care about.

Objectives: 

The learner will:

  • identify how some celebrities care for specific causes.
  • list what they care about enough to give their time, talent, and tresure and take action.

  1. Anticipatory Set:

    Ask the learners to name some of their favorite actors, writers, and people in sports. Sometimes famous people use their privilege to speak up for causes they care about. Because they are famous, they can cause people to think about their own actions. Discuss how that makes them feel or what they think about that.

    Look up on the internet "celebrities and their causes." Project the findings and identify the philanthropy of some of the famous people the youth know and care about. 

  2. Philanthropists are people who give their time, talent, or treasure and take action for the common good. Tell the learners that many celebrities deeply care about issues and take action to address those issues.

  3. Challenge the learners to find 2-5 different celebrities they know and list the causes they support and what they do with their time, talent, and treasure to make a difference. Allow time for each learning to share one or two of their celebrities and what they do.

  4. Discuss examples of ways these famous people match their areas of caring. Maybe the service matches a character they play or a trait they exhibit. 

  5. Suggest that each of these people has discovered their philanthropic passion -- the causes or social issues they care enough about to take action for.

  6. Ask the learners to list in their journals three to five causes or social issues they care about.
