Learners listen to different statements of "the right thing to do" and determine the source of the value or judgment.

  1. Anticipatory Set:

    Ask the learners to repeat some phrases they hear from adults that remind them of the right thing to do or say in a situation. For example, they might hear the phrase, "You know better than that!"  Talk about the words their parents, youth leaders, and peers use and how we learn "the right thing to do" in different situations. 

  2. Discuss the definition of integrity. Begin with "knowing and doing what's right."

  3. Make four columns on a chart with these headers: home, school/clubs, faith, and friends. 

  4. Read aloud some of the following phrases of wisdom or advice and ask learners to identify in which place it is heard or learned. Add a mark or word to the column to identify it. 

    They will have different answers for many of them, so ask them to explain and give rationale from their different perspectives. 

    1. Treat others as you want to be treated.
    2. Eat well, exercise, and rest for a healthy body and mind.
    3. Take turns and let others go first.
    4. Be open and curious of others' perspectives.
    5. Talk after you swallow your food.
    6. Listen before you speak.
    7. Stand up for what you believe.
    8. Tell the truth.
    9. Know yourself.
    10. Always walk against traffic so cars can see you coming.
    11. Be on time.
    12. Look for ways to make a better world.
    13. Before you judge another, walk in their shoes for a while.
    14. Show respect for others' property.
    15. Do not gossip or spread rumors about another person.
    16. If you say you will do something, then do it!
    17. Work together for the common good.
    18. Recycle whenever possible. 
  5. Ask for more advice sayings they value to add to the columns.

  6. Based on where the most marks fall, discuss where most of what we learn about "knowing what's right" comes from? (Allow for response and discussion.)

  7. Ask the learners to reflect in writing on their own values related to integrity and what drives them to have integrity in different settings.
