Students will understand the organization of a non-profit agency, including how it is funded and how the resources are allocated. They will also volunteer for a minimum of four hours at the agency. (This lesson continues the learning from Lesson Four.)

  • Describe the work and organization of a specific non-profit agency.
  • Analyze the value of their service using journal entries.
Materials: 
  • Student Journals
  • Journal Rubric (Handout One) Spanish version (Handout Three)
  • Service Project Rubric (Handout Two) Spanish version (Handout Four)

  1. Anticipatory Set:Ask how many students have completed their interviews at a local agency. Have students name the agencies they visited.

  2. Distribute to each student Journal Rubric (see Attachment One) and Service Project Rubric (see Attachment Two). Go over the requirements for the Journal entries which are to be completed after the interview and four hours of service at the agency.

    • While students are working independently at their non-profit agencies, they should keep a reflection journal of their experiences, describing in detail what they learned from the interview about the organization of the agency, what they did for their service, whether or not their work made a positive difference and how they felt. They should include any interesting anecdotes from their experiences.
Assessment: 

Journal check for completeness and thoroughness (see Journal Rubric, Attachment One, and Service Project Rubric, Attachment Two).
