Learners will investigate the five themes of geography as applicable to Europe, discover traditional examples of culture, and illustrate the impact of non-profit philanthropic organizations in selected European countries.

Objectives: 

The learner will:

  • replicate a geo-political map of Europe, citing political boundaries, resources, major transportation routes and population centers.
  • discover and identify key needs that non-profit organizations address in selected nations.
  • research cultural traditions of a selected European nation and describe how they have affected the development of philanthropy and stewardship in these countries.
  • compare/contrast the development of philanthropy and stewardship between newly emerging democracies in Europe with established democracies.

  • Poster boards to prepare maps

  1. Anticipatory Set: Obtain the video "Fall of the Berlin Wall," a Warner Home Video, Oct. 24, 1990, available at Amazon.com and library collections. Show and discuss the video with your learners. Develop the history of the Cold War and the division of Europe between democracies and Communist regimes. Explore with your class the nations that were freed as a result of the Berlin wall coming down. As an outcome of the video and discussions, prepare a T list of established democracies before 1985 and new democracies after 1985. Post this list on the board for use in the instructional sequence.Divide students into two teams. One team will research and report on long standing democracies in Europe and the other group will research and report on newly emerging democracies in Europe and their cultural traditions (see Bibliographical References for sources).

  2. TEAM 1: Each learner will select a nation of Europe from the list of old established democracies. They will investigate and demonstrate knowledge of two trends of their chosen country that affected the development of philanthropic organizations. Pollution in Britain, for example, or volcanic eruptions in Italy and Sicily are just two themes that could be developed.

    • Analyze the relationship between these trends and the key issues involved in the establishment of stewardship and philanthropic organizations.
    • Each learner is to prepare an individual report of his or her findings.
    • Each learner is to be responsible for preparing a map of his/her nation, showing where the problems were and the philanthropy that was provided. Each map is to include boundaries, geo-political features, transportation routes and population centers.
    • TEAM 2: Each member is to select a nation from the list of newly emerging democracies and the relationship between public and private sectors in the formation of stewardship and the establishment of philanthropic organizations.
    • Each learner is to prepare an individual report of his or her findings.
    • Each learner is to be responsible for preparing a map on poster paper of his or her nation showing where the problems were and the philanthropy that was provided.

  3. Culminating Activity:

  4. Pair one learner from Team A with a member of Team B. Give each pair a T chart, Attachment One: T-Chart for Comparing Two Countries and have them fill in a comparison/contrast for each of their nations.

    • Each pair presents their report and shares the poster maps they have prepared.
Assessment: 

Evaluate Attachment One: T-Chart for Comparing Two Countries, reports written by learners, teacher observations, team participation.
